Acupuncture
and Smoking Cessation
Acupuncture is the best method
at getting people through the most difficult time in their quest to
stop smoking. That time is the first 3 to 10 days. It has a 60 to 90
percent success rate, depending upon the study, in treating short
term smoking cessation. Of those people who stop, some will start
smoking again, but there are many other variables, such as alcohol,
friends and stress, that lead them to smoke again. There are
excellent support groups that can help with the long term desire to
continue a smokeless life. Once again acupuncture is a great aid
during the hurdle of the first two weeks.
Goodman
Wellness Center's Treatment Method
We have spent the last eight
years fine-tuning a treatment protocol that gives the quickest and
longest lasting results. The primary treatment consists of auricular
therapy (ear acupuncture), which is the placement of fine needles in
the ear. These points release certain chemicals in the brain,
endorphins, which help combat the withdrawal symptoms and the desire
to smoke. With correct treatment, a patient will lose the ability to
smell a cigarette within the first five minutes of the insertion of
the needles. After the initial ear points have started working then
body points are added to calm the mind and reduce anxiety. Most
patients experience a natural high that immediately puts them, as
they say, "in a happy place."
Treatments
Required
It takes 1-2 treatments in one
week with one follow-up treatment the next week to ensure the best
results. If a patient does not respond in three treatments then they
are not a good candidate for acupuncture.

Important Note: Acupuncture
is not a cure all end all for smoking cessation. It is best used to
get you over the hump, the initial stage of smoking cessation, and
as follow up treatments if the cravings return down the road. Some
individuals may need more frequent follow up care depending upon
their own constitution. Group counseling and other therapies will
benefit the long term desire to quit smoking.
